Mobile phone use has continued to increase across Australia, with developments in hardware, apps, and internet infrastructure allowing users to do more and more on their smartphones. In the six months to June 2023, about 86 percent of adults in a survey about telecommunications in Australia said they used their mobile phones to access the internet multiple times a day.
Mobile internet use
While the availability of 5G in Australia is still relatively low, the installation of 5G over the past few years has supported the use of mobile internet across many areas of everyday life. The daily activities performed on smartphones vary greatly, with Australians using smartphones to shop online, conduct business, play games, stream content, and much more.
Online shopping on-the-go
The share of mobile consumers who perform online shopping activities has expanded, with almost half of mobile consumers browsing shopping websites or apps and one-third purchasing products online. While many consumers use mobile shopping platforms for convenience, interestingly, the distribution of mobile-commerce transactions is fairly evenly split across apps and browsers.
